This Week: June 25, 2018 Lunch Program

The Rapids Sampler - 2018 Edition
Lunch and planning session

12:15 PM
Bunker Hills Event Center

If you can believe it, we are 14 weeks away from the 2018 Rapids Sampler.  That's not a misprint or miscalculation of the facts.  As certain as the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, the Rapids Sampler is coming to the Bunker Hills Event Center on Thursday, September 27, 2018.

To put your minds at greater ease, it still means we have 95 days to plan and prepare for this year's event.  As Steve Miller aptly sang on his 1976 hit single Fly Like an Eagle, "...time keeps slipping, slipping, slipping into the future."   Translation: the Rapids Sampler planning clock is ticking and it is time to make Rotary hay while the sun is shining.  On Monday, we are going to talk all things Rapids Sampler and what you can do to be part of the fun.

When we divide and conquer the tasks, there is a sharing of the workload.  Less work per capita so to speak, which is a good metric for measuring success in such matters.  It's also a great way to connect with your fellow Rotarians and build stronger friendships (and some goodwill too).   Moreover it's a chance to put our collective time, talents and resources to do good in our community and beyond.  What we do has an impact - and we all know it and can see it.

In the most recent edition of the Rotarian magazine, there is a column by incoming Rotary International President Barry Rassin that seems rather fitting.  He wrote that as Rotarians "We unite, because we know that we are far stronger together than we could ever be alone.  We take action, because we are not dreamers, but doers.  We work to create lasting change that will endure long after our involvement has ended...And perhaps most important of all, we work to create change...not just building a better world around us, but becoming better people ourselves."

The Rapids Sampler is not just any ordinary event.  It's our signature fundraiser.  It's the Rotary way of making a difference and being an inspiration to others.  However, it all starts with you.  I hope to see you on Monday.  Thanks!

Weekly Announcements: June 25, 2018

2018-2019 Budget Update

We are still working on a budget document for the upcoming Rotary Year, but do not have it in final form to present for board and club review.  A draft document has been completed and is being reviewed by Letty Van Ert and Grant Fernelius.  The goal is to finish the budget for the July 16th board meeting and then present it to the club.

July 2nd Meeting

On Monday, we'll take an informal poll to see how many club members plan attend the club lunch meeting on July 2nd.  Given the mid-week Independence Day holiday, we suspect a number of people will be out of town.  We will not have a speaker program that day.  If you can't attend tomorrow (June 25th), please let Grant Fernelius know so that we can plan accordingly for July 2nd.

New Weekly Bulletin Editor Coming
Jeff Athmann takes over in July

As reported in recent weeks, I am passing the ink well, feathered quill pen and parchment paper to a new weekly editor.  I have enjoyed writing the Weekly Bulletin, but the time has come to pass the duties to someone else.  From time to time, I will ask for column space from Jeff Athmann, but otherwise the long-standing tradition will continue with a new voice.  Jeff was in the newspaper business for many years and I know he will do a great job of delivering the Rotary news.  Thanks for the opportunity to serve and exercise my creative side.   Hopefully, you enjoyed it as much as I did writing it each week.  I appreciate the kind words shared over the last year.
